Christchurch, also known as the Garden City and the most English city outside of England, offers a vibrant mix of street art, events, wineries, beaches, parks, golf, charming trams, delicious food, and locals who will leave you touched by their hospitality and willingness to share the best of what their colourful city has to offer.

Christchurch might not be the first luxury destination one can think of in New Zealand. Many do still primary associate it with the devastating earthquake in 2011, that took 185 lives and destroyed the whole city centre, but the locals have refused to let their beautiful city lose its magic.

Why You Should Visit

During my recent visit, I felt like I was in a new city. Still as charming, but with several innovative attractions and a growing cosmopolitan vibe. A lot of time and love has been invested into giving Christchurch the must-visit stamp it once had, and I must say that it was amazing to walk around its colourful streets.

In combination with an increase of exclusive, dreamlike accommodation on the outskirts of Christchurch, such as Annandale’s Seascape that you can read more about below, a Christchurch Luxury Holiday is a great addition to your New Zealand bucket list.

What to do in Christchurch – Activities not to miss

My grandson and I exploring the charming streets in Christchurch.

The best way to explore the centre of Christchurch, or Otautahi as it’s called in Maori, is on foot or by bike. Even if the city is relatively small, it’s recommended to allow some time, since there are numerous cute cafes and funky bars that will make you want to stop for ‘just a little something’.

Good eats can be found everywhere.

Pass by the most famous landmark, the Cathedral, which was destroyed in the earthquake, but after much debate is going to be rebuilt.

New Zealand’s Street Art Capital

Christchurch, in my opinion, has become New Zealand’s street art capital. Each piece of art represents a deeper message, and touring the colourful streets is a great way to learn about New Zealand’s history and culture. In 2017, the new Street Prints Otautahi festival was introduced, resulting in growing the already vibrant street art collection further.

The art is amazing, I couldn’t stop taking photos.

Apart from street art, Christchurch’s cultural menu is wide-ranging in general. The bar scene presents local shows and stand-up comedy on a regular basis, and the theatre features an exciting programme of shows ranging from classics to modern.

There are several museums to choose from. The monument 185 Chairs is an open-air memorial for each individual victim of the earthquake and it’s impossible to visit it without feeling for the victims and their loved ones.

Not called the Garden City for nothing

Exploring the many parks and gardens is a must-do when in Christchurch. Why not enjoy a delicious gourmet picnic in your favourite one? Christchurch was named ‘The Outstanding Garden City of the Year’ already in 1996 in the Nations in Bloom International Competition, where 620 cities took part, and its gardens are still one of the main attractions.

The 161 hectare Hagley Park, right in the heart of the city, is the most popular one. There are also several others to choose from, such as the Botanic Gardens, Halswell Quarry Park and Mona Vale, each with its own charm and beauty.

Great events and beautiful beaches

Furthermore, Christchurch is New Zealand’s leading event destination. During the annual Floral Festival (June), one of the highlights on the calendar, the whole city transforms to a beautiful, innovative colour palette of flowers presented by local retailers. Other main events are the music festival Classical Sparks (February) and the Kidsfest (during the Winter Holidays).

There are about a dozen more well-established events taking place each year, covering music, art (as you might have figured by now), adventure, races, books, balloons, local delicacies and more.

If you’re visiting during the summer season, you’ll have several gorgeous beaches at your disposal. If you still are in the mood for action after the city sightseeing, there are great surf spots, as well beaches famous for wildlife, a short drive away from the city. Sumner Beach, Taylors Mistake Bay and Waikuku Beach are just a few of many great alternatives.

Get out – Daytrips and shorter tours from Christchurch

If you have a few extra days to spare, there are several stunning areas close by Christchurch. Our third biggest city is a start off point for several incredible experiences on the South Island, such as whale watching in Kaikoura, trips to MT Cook, 4WD adventures, skiing at MT Hutt and more.

Many of the scenes in the Lord of the Rings were recorded in this area, just to give you an idea of the stunning beauty.

Where to stay in Christchurch

The exclusive accommodation selection in Christchurch has improved over the past years. I stayed at Sumner beach, a beautiful beach nearby the gorgeous Taylors Mistake, also well worth a visit. Luxury lodging relatively close by the city centre can also be arranged, with activities such as spa, horse riding, your own harness racing experience, private hiking tours, helicopter rides and golf packages included.

Annandale Seascape for a paradise getaway

Christchurch Luxury Holiday

After a couple of days in the city, you’ll find the perfect escape at Annandale Seascape. 1,5 hours’ scenic drive from Christchurch, Annandale is a destination property that offers 4 amazing luxury properties to stay in to suit groups or couples wanting a paradise getaway.

Choose between being driven in luxury vehicle by your own driver, self-drive in your dream car or take a helicopter ride straight from the airport in Christchurch right to the door at Seascape.

Annandale’s Seascape has received several awards for its architecture.

It takes 40 minutes to drive from the main front gates to the gorgeous Seascape property. The drive-in is spectacularly scenic and dramatic. The property, designed by renowned NZ architects Patterson & Associates, sits in its own private bay, seamlessly built into the natural, beautiful, surrounding landscape.

The views are stunning, and the interior is high tech, in modern contemporary style. Far away from everything, you will feel like you are the only one(s) in the world.

The delicious food at Annandale is planned and prepared for your stay and comes with instructions to heat and serve. Everything is sourced/produced on the property. Annandale is an actual working farm producing their own delicious lamb, and even wool, which is sent to a mill in England to turn into the luscious luxe blankets provided in each property.

There are so many spaces to enjoy the location, including an outdoor jacuzzi built into the deck, alongside an outdoor fireplace.

You don’t really have to leave once you are here. However, if you would like to explore the region, the property has its own boat to offer fishing and tours with a guide, Jo, who knows the lay of the land like the back of her hand.

I personally think that Akaroa, which is a short 15 min drive from Annandale, is a must do. Settled by the French in the 1800’s it has maintained that very same vibe, with picturesque houses and cobblestone streets. It’s a marine wildlife mecca, where you can swim with dolphins, whale watch and see wild seals and penguins.

In addition to Annandale Seascape, there are other beautiful luxury lodge options available, such as award-winning Otahuna lodge, to complete your Christchurch Luxury Holiday.
